René CHAR. - Lot 61
René CHAR. The Tomb of Secrets. Sans lieu [Nimes, imprimerie A. Larguier for the author], 1930. In-4, paperback, cover printed on red paper. Original edition. Limited edition of 103 copies : one of the 90 on white coated paper from Papeteries Rioux. The illustration includes 12 full-page photographic reproductions, the last one enriched with an original collage by Paul Éluard and André Breton. This collage is different for each copy: it covers the face of Louise Roze, the poet's godmother (and a distant descendant of a notary of the Marquis de Sade), displeased that her portrait was used. Le Tombeau des secrets appeared the same year as Ralentir travaux, which brought together Breton, Char and Éluard. The friendship between the two poets was to culminate in 1949 with the dedication to René Char of Les Cinq Sapates, one of Francis Ponge's most beautiful books, illustrated by Georges Braque (Coron, René Char, p. 112 - Peyré, Peinture et Poésie, le dialogue par le livre, no. 33).
