René CHAR. - Lot 68
René CHAR. The Hammer without a master. Paris, Le Vent d'Arles, 1976. In-folio, in sheets, decorated grey paper cover filled, publisher's box in red demibasane. Large illustrated book with 23 original etchings and aquatints in colours by Joan Miró, eight of which are double-page spread. Unique edition of 215 copies on Arches wove paper, signed by the poet and the artist (nº 69). Complicity with Miró. "No painter was more frequently associated with René Char's poems than Joan Miró: from 1948 to 1976, four illustrated books, a dozen more modest collaborations, not to mention the "illuminated" manuscripts [...]. Miró could refuse nothing to his friends, especially when it came to Char, for whom he soon had a complete but silent admiration. [...] This relationship, with no apparent dialogue, was no less profound. They both enjoyed working together: Miró was a true reader of poetry, and Char wrote about his painting in 1963, the most elaborate of his texts on art, situating Miró's as a "gravitation towards the sources", "the first spark in the childhood of time". We find this playful joy in almost every book or manuscript to which the painter was invited" (Antoine Coron). Miró took two years to complete the engraving of the plates of The Hammer without Master (Coron, René Char, BnF, 2007, p. 178 and nº 295.- Cramer, Joan Miró, les livres illustrés, n° 216).
