[Marcel DUCHAMP]. - Lot 92
[Marcel DUCHAMP]. Monument to Christopher Columbus and Marcel Duchamp. Paris, Georges Visat Editions, 1971. Folio album, khaki box, smooth spine, large ovoid decoration in hollow and relief in the center of the first plate including in the center a large white egg-shaped box piece, a triple plastic paperclip frame in monochrome blue with, surrounding it, the title in large white plastic letters, lining and endpapers in khaki suede, entirely untrimmed, cover and spine preserved, and the first plate of the publisher's case in blue cloth bearing Marcel Duchamp's initials in silver letters, case (Leroux, 1980). Unique edition of this Tribute to Marcel Duchamp: limited edition of 160 copies, including 35 collaborators (no. 67) on Arches and Lana pure thread vellum. Album of 13 original etchings, including 10 in colour, all signed and justified by the painters: Pierre Alechinsky, Arman, Enrico Baj, Hans Bellmeer, Camille Bryen, Max Ernst, Raoul Hausmann, Man Ray (2 etchings), Roberto Matta, Joan Miró, Hans Richter, Dorothea Tanning. Each plate is preceded by a sheet bearing the artist's name in cold-stamped letters with, on the reverse, a printed evocation of Marcel Duchamp. Arman noted, "An accumulation of readymade despite the accumulation will always be a tribute to Marcel Duchamp." Begun in September 1968, a month before Duchamp's death, the work was not completed until March 1971: it brings together around the figure of Duchamp twelve artists, from the early companions to the younger generation artists who claim to be his disciples. Very ingenious binding by Georges Leroux using, for its decoration, plastic paperclips in different shades of blue, a way of paying homage to Duchamp's readymade (Cramer, Joan Miró, les livres illustrés, nº 140: Miró's print is the only one that was printed on Adrien Maeght's presses, all the others on the presses of Éditions Georges Visat).
