Signed autograph: to Louis Broder, these poems defending my most precious possessions, affectionately, Paul Éluard The poet noted, under the justification on which appears a stylized paper casserole: "This casserole, put there by mistake, in defiance of any judge [sic], was the mark of Paul Léautaud. PE." Paul Éluard was very close to Louis Broder, the enterprising publisher of post-war painters' books: together, they had prepared a poem in each book, twelve poems to be illustrated by his painter friends. The collection was published posthumously in 1956. At the end of the volume, Paul Éluard copied the title and fourteen verses from the collection Au défaut du silence dedicated to Gala (1925, cf. no. 95 of this sale): Au défaut du silence I shut myself up in my love, I dream. Which of us invented the other? Face piercing the walls She loved me to 'forget, she lived to die. In the darkest eyes close the lightest. Love, oh my love, I vowed to lose you. Grimace, little girl by birth. The shape of your eyes does not teach me to live. And if I am to others, remember. Cry, tears are the petals of the heart. Where are you? Are you turning the sun of oblivion in my heart? Give yourself up, let your hands open like eyes. Crazy, escaped, your breasts are at the front.<
