Nusch et Paul ÉLUARD. - Lot 97
Nusch et Paul ÉLUARD. Letter to Man Ray. No place or date [circa 1937]. Postcard covered on the front with blue paper with original collage by Nusch Éluard . Charming autograph postcard written by both hands, with an original collage of Nusch on the front. It begins with a text by Nusch Éluard, written in his singular spelling: "Dear Man voilla ce que je vous dois. We have received your being. We meet again in 8 days. I hope you don't mind the collage." The rest is from Paul Éluard: "Yes, the spelling of Nusch is a marvel. But she's also very careful. We're very happy to be back. The snow here is a plague. We're three meters away and it's still going on. I thought Nusch would come back brown, but I can't see what it is anymore. Days and nights I dream of endless horizons. Both of you, very affectionately yours. Paul." In a short essay published in 2010, Timothy Baum drew attention to Nusch's collages, based on confidences Man Ray gave him in the early 1970s. Prey to repeated insomnia in 1935 or 1936, Nusch consulted a psychiatrist who first suggested that she keep a diary that she would write each night before going to bed, which she refused, arguing that writing was her husband's preserve. She similarly declined the idea of drawing, "simply explaining that she had no talent as an artist and that even though she had participated in Cadavres exquis with her husband and the Surrealists, drawing was not a natural practice for her.... Shortly afterwards, no doubt inspired by Paul, Nusch began cutting out photographs from magazines and reconstructing them into collages. She used postcards as a medium, adding elements of her own choosing as she pleased. The results were immediate and charming. After a short period of time (less than a week), this pleasant form of therapy allowed Nusch to get back to sleep. During this brief adventure into the original world of collage, Nusch's works are both few and beautiful" (Timothy Baum, Les Collages de Nusch in C
