Valentine HUGO. - Lot 133
Valentine HUGO. André Breton and Paul Éluard lying in bed. Ile de Sein, July 1931]. Original photograph, silver print (87 x 128 mm), with annotations from Valentine Hugo's hand on the back. André Breton and Paul Éluard lying in an anchor near a stranded boat on Sein Island: original photograph taken by Valentine Hugo in 1931. Nusch and Paul Éluard travel to Brittany with André Breton and Valentine Hugo in July 1931. Confident of Éluard - who nicknamed her "my lace-maker" - she became Breton's mistress, an affair that ended a year later. Painter and musician, Valentine Gross (1887-1968) had married the painter Jean Hugo in 1919, whose surname she kept after her divorce. She illustrated several of Éluard's books, including Médieuses (see no. 100 in this catalogue). The print, which is very well preserved, is annotated on the back by Valentine Hugo (Éluard, Lettres à Gala, 1984, photograph no. 8: the publisher, Pierre Dreyfus, has reproduced another of the photographs taken by Valentine Hugo in July 1931 on the Ile de Sein of the two writers in sailors' costumes - Valette, Éluard, livre d' identité, 1967, no. 107).
