Max JACOB. - Lot 138
Max JACOB. The burlesque and mystical works of Brother Matorel who died in the convent. Illustrated with woodcuts by André Derain. Paris, Henry Kahnweiler, 1912. In-8, paperback. Original edition of 106 numbered copies: one of the 85 printed on hollande Van Gelder, signed by the author and the painter (n° 99). The illustration includes 66 woodcuts by André Derain, including one full page. This "bouquet of words and images at the top of the chord" (Yves Peyré) forms the second part of the Saint Matorel trilogy; it is the only one illustrated by André Derain. "The trilogy will have confirmed, even in virtuosity, the striking reprise of L'Enchanteur pourrissant [illustrated by Derain]. Kahnweiler, through Derain and Picasso, Apollinaire and Max Jacob, shaped the form of the book of dialogue-the principles are in place, the laws are established" (Peinture et Poésie, le dialogue par le livre, p. 110). Preserved copy as published, paperback. Some pricking. (The Artist and the Book, nº 79.- Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book, nº 389: "Matorel's religious associations, burlesqued in Jacob's text, sometimes lead Derain to designs which bring to mind the wood engravings of the fifteenth century."- Chapon, Le Peintre et le Livre, p. 106: "The archaic woodwork is not an anachronistic pastiche, like Emile Bernard's woodwork for the Villon de Vollard. It is the transposition of the same spirit, often parodic, which dictated to Max Jacob this collection inspired by certain compilations where our fathers mixed pieces of popular tradition").
