LAUTRÉAMONT. - Lot 148
LAUTRÉAMONT. The Songs of Maldoror. Original etchings by Salvador Dalí. Paris, Albert Skira, 1934. Small and strong in-folio, black morocco, smooth spine, dishes decorated with a cold decoration and mosaic of pieces of white and grey morocco and black suede, lining and guards of black morocco, gold edges on witnesses, preserved cover and spine, shirt, case (Paul Bonet, 1948). Famous book illustrated by Salvador Dalí with 42 original etchings, 30 of them without text. An announced print run of 210 copies on Arches vellum: as the book was not a success when it came out, the print run "would have been reduced, in fact, to half and would never have been completed" (François Chapon). One of the 40 leading copies (no. 21), signed by the painter and accompanied by the continuation with remarks of 44 plates. At the instigation of René Crevel, Albert Skira asked Salvador Dalí to illustrate the revered text of the Surrealists. "The first book to which Dalí gave his undivided attention. Recent research has questioned his involvement in the production of the etchings, and from drawings and proofs it appears that Dalí's images were assisted by the skill of professional printers. Nevertheless, the images are from the artist's most intense and inventive period, making this his major contribution to the modern artist's book" (Riva Castleman). Copy enriched with 6 large original pencil drawings by Salvador Dalí on three double-sided sheets mounted at the top. Very beautiful decorated binding by Paul Bonet. (Capon, The Painter and the Book, pp. 152-154; Riva Castleman, A Century of Artists Books, p. 94; Johnson, Artists' Books in the Modern Era, 1870-2000, no. 106; Carnets Paul Bonet, no. 838).
