Michel LEIRIS. - Lot 153
Michel LEIRIS. Vegetable trifles. Copper engravings by Joan Miró. Paris, Jean Aubier, 1956. In-8, in sheets, filled cover, cardboard folder and case, red calf title coin. Original edition: it is illustrated with 6 original colour etchings and aquatints by Joan Miró, two of them double page. As announced in the justification, "the red and green dots on the frontispiece and the plate on page 17 were applied by the artist himself". Limited edition of 311 copies. One of the 11 copies on Auvergne laid paper, "for the friends of the publisher prematurely disappeared" (nº VIII), signed by the author and the painter. Delightful book, by Jean Aubier, unfortunately disappeared before the work was completed. Antoine Coron pays homage to this discreet publisher, "who loved a style of books as close as possible to those of Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler at his best period." Publisher of the poets - Frénaud, Ponge, Tzara - he called on Miró for these Bagatelles végétales by Michel Leiris, which were included in the Mots sans mémoire in 1969. "Michel Leiris's text is another of those misuses of language, the language worn out by the use of exchange, which is revived by puns and phonetic contamination. As for Miró's engravings, they are among the most beautiful he has given for books. At the time of their publication, the print run on Auvergne, which was very limited, was entirely subscribed" (Antoine Coron). In his description of the copy of Reva and David Logan, Robert Flynn Johnson insists on the particular technique employed by Joan Miró: "In these prints he enlivens the surface by gouging the plate and printing in relief. The results appear more like drawings than graphic work. In fact, for the frontispiece, Miró applied the color red to each print by hand, rather by printing it." Autograph signed by Joan Miró, illustrated with an original full-page coloured pencil drawing: to Louis Broder, in all friendship Miró Louis Broder publ
