René MAGRITTE. - Lot 161
René MAGRITTE. Letter to Paul Éluard. No place [Brussels], Tuesday, December 11, 1945. Autograph letter signed "René Georgette Marguerite", 1 p. in-4. Friendly letter from the painter to the poet about their projects: an illustrated book, a conference and an upcoming exhibition - and the delivery of paintings. Magritte acknowledges receipt of a poem, En Espagne, which he is to forward for publication to a newspaper. Then he talks about a book project: "I thought, I think, I will think about Examples. I am re-reading this magnificent book and I would have to find a new idea of illustration. I feel that it will come and that I will be able to show you something exciting for March 15, 1946" - the date of a conference that Éluard is to give in Brussels and for which he asks him for information. In fact, the book appeared the following year, illustrated with twelve drawings by Magritte: Les Nécessités de la vie et les conséquences du rêve, preceded by Exemples (Paris and Brussels, 1946). He informed him of the exhibition that was to open a few days later: "As I told you, I am organising an exhibition in Brussels under the title 'Surrealism', it will open on the 15th of this month. There is an extract from one of your critical texts in the catalogue. ...] For your two paintings, if Suzanne can't find a way to send them to you, I could have a resourceful traveller bring them to you. Take good care of yourself, and receive with Nusch my fondest memories. René Georgette Marguerite."
