Roberto Matta. - Lot 179
Roberto Matta. Letter to Pierre Mabille. No place or date [New York, November 1940]. Autograph letter signed, in pencil, illustrated with two original drawings in colored pencils, 3 pp. in-4, envelope enclosed. Superb autograph letter illustrated with two large original drawings in crayons, addressed by the painter in exile in the United States to Pierre Mabille. The preserved envelope bears Mabille's address in Salon de Provence; it has been redirected to Marseille. Receipt stamp of the Marseille post office on November 22, 1940. The painter announces the creation of a magazine and makes an allusion to Pierre Mabille's Miroir du merveilleux, published in 1940 in Paris. (Matta's singular spelling has been respected.) "Dearest Mabille, [...] In this country, love has lost its own magic of relationships, of the use of gestures, of incantations under the light of obscure and deep mysteries. The street of America is of an elastic water, like a desecration to the hazard, a pearl for the destiny subjected to a quoditidine manipulation of the mechanisms of the attention on an intestinal and intestinal materialism. We propose to show the electricians the constructions of the spirit, this architecture to live, a mirror of the marvellous in this emigrant's room somewhere in the castle. A magazine, its name not very clear, asleep in a tree but with the energetic laughter of Minotaur (nocturnal pollution of a fire-eater) a magazine to overthrow men inside with the sixteen heels of Yampontaka. We hope to publish the first issue in December, in the heart of the eye this black beast that the earth experiences today. We look forward to your cooperation and direction [...]. Dear Mabille, I hope for news from you, endless, I am still confused for me the ghosts of the modern esculture. Matta My address, I don't have one, YVES is 30 West 11th street, write me at his house." Two beautiful and large original drawings by Matta adorn the letter: pen
