Joan MIRO. - Lot 192
Joan MIRO. 13 lithographs to illustrate The Lizard with Golden Feathers. No place or date [Louis Broder, 1967]. 13 lithographs printed on parchment (354 x 499 mm), in sheets. Superb suite of 13 original colour lithographs by Joan Miró, the number 1 of the 5 artist's proofs printed on parchment, all justified and signed by the painter. They bear witness to an unfinished project. "In 1967 Miró produced eighteen colour lithographs to accompany his poem The Lizard with Golden Feathers. Some time after the plates were printed, the artist and the publisher, Louis Broder, realized that a manufacturing defect in the paper had caused color alterations, so they decided to refuse the print and destroy it. There could be no question of reprinting the same compositions, the zincs having been erased in the meantime. Miró therefore made new lithographs which appeared in 1971 under the same title" (Mourlot, Miró lithographer). The initial project consisted of eighteen lithographs, four of which were double-page: as with the edition published four years later (cf. next nº), sequences of the single lithographs had been printed and signed, on parchment, japanese and Rives vellum. It is not known if all the defective plates on Rives were destroyed, but it seems certain that Louis Broder marketed some of the suites on parchment and on japanese, although the print run is not known with certainty. The 13 lithographs, in artist's proofs on parchment and signed, preserved here, come from the archives of the publisher Louis Broder. Superb proofs. (Mourlot, Miró lithographer, III, 1976: numbers 446-450, 453-456, 458-461. Numbers 445, 452, 457 and 462 are double plates which were not printed consecutively. For the suite to be complete, plate no. 451 is therefore missing).
