FRANCIS PICABIA. 290. NO. 1. Price 10 F. January 10, 1917. Barcelona. Manuscript autograph, illustrated and signed, in folio of (5) ff. in sheets. Extraordinary autograph manuscript signed, unpublished, illustrated with original drawings: a model of a magazine project which has never been published and of which no other trace is preserved. Composition: one double leaf written on the four pages, enclosing three leaves written on the front only. The folded double leaflet bears: - Page 1: title and large original signed drawing entitled: Entre nous. - Page 2: copies of calligrams by Guillaume Apollinaire and, at the bottom, this announcement: "Here was supposed to appear a musical page by Gabrielle Buffet but our friend is in Switzerland where she's trying to go skiing." Apollinaire's calligrams are copied from a page of Case d'Armons entitled "Madeleine". We know that Apollinaire had addressed to Picabia a copy of his booklet printed in 1915 in the trenches in 25 copies. - Page 3: large drawing in ink with wash highlights entitled: Quelques seinges d'Amerique. Marie Tristouse. (Apollinaire had nicknamed Marie Laurencin "Tristouse Ballerinette".) - Page 4 : Smells of Barcelona. The page is covered by a text written in sympathetic pale blue ink, difficult to read, with black ink intertitles. The three inserted sheets carry : - An autograph poem dated 1914-1915, initialed and titled: Magic City. - A signed autograph manuscript entitled: Bossus. - A large watercolour composition in three tones signed and titled at the top : Marie Laurencin. It is a variant of the Portrait of Marie Laurencin, Four in Hand, circa 1916-1917 (kept at the Centre Pompidou, Musée national d'art moderne, Paris). On 25 January 1917, Francis Picabia launched the first issue of his magazine 391 in Barcelona, which was to have a total of nineteen issues until October 1924. The first four issues appeared in Barcelona, where Francis Picabia stayed for about t
