Tristan TZARA. - Lot 247
Tristan TZARA. Speak alone, poem. Lithographs by Joan Miró. Paris, Maeght, 1948-1950. In-folio, in sheets, filled cover illustrated on the first plate of a colour lithograph printed on a collage, folder and editor's case illustrated with colour lithographs. Original edition. Edition of 253 copies, of which three are collaborators: one of the 200 on malacca pur chiffon (no. 215), signed by the poet and by the painter. 72 original colour lithographs by Joan Miró, one double for the folder and case and one on the cover, printed on a collage. The collection was written in the psychiatric hospital of Saint-Alban-sur-Limagnole in the summer of 1945: Tristan Tzara had been invited there by the director of the establishment, Dr . Lucien Bonnafé. It was there that Nusch and Paul Éluard lived clandestinely during the Occupation, from November 1943 to February 1944. Once finished Speaking Alone, Tzara chose his "old friend" Miró as illustrator: "Tzara was then the poet to whom Miró was most attached. They had met in the early 1920s and the painter had found in him his first defender" (Antoine Coron). "Characterized by flowing spontaneity, Miró's lithographic illustrations in primary colors are perfectly paired with the eclectic verse of Tzara. This major publication took two years to produce. The driving force behind this and many other postwar European artists' books was the French dealer-publisher Aimé Maeght. A trained lithographer himself, Maeght was instrumental in attracting artists to the creative possibilities of the medium and how they could be applied to book illustration" (Robert Flynn Johnson). (Cramer, Joan Miró, Les livres illustrés, no. 17 - Coron, 50 illustrated books since 1947, no. 9 - Johnson, Artists' Books in the Modern Era, 1870-2000, no. 127).
