BOUHOURS, le Père Dominique.
New remarks on the French language. Second edition. Paris, Sébastien Mabre- Cramoisy, 1676. In-12 (152 x 86 mm) of 9 ff.n.ch., 600 pp., 7 ff.n.ch.; fawn calf, triple gilt fillet, central coat of arms of Paulin Prondre or Pronde (OHR, 1951), spine ribbed, boxes decorated in staggered rows with pieces of red morocco and decorated with a flower, red edges (contemporary binding). A Jesuit priest and grammarian, Dominique Bouhours (1628-1702) exerted a strong influence on authors such as Boileau, La Bruyère and Racine, who sent him their pieces to be corrected. "This beautiful spirit, one of the finest connoisseurs of the French language, was considered to be the heir and emulator of Vaugelas... It is above all through his study of the French language that Bouhours deserves to interest us again. In this way, his rule consists in following the good use that one should seek in the 'trade of honest people' and 'in the reading of good books'" (Grente, p. 194-195). A fine copy, well preserved in its beautiful binding with the arms of Paulin Prondre, sieur de Guermantes et de Bussy (1650-1723), adviser and secretary to the king, receiver of finances in Lyon, and president of the Chambre des Comptes in Paris. "Books of this provenance are generally very well bound" (OHR). De Backer-Sommervogel, I, 1901:12.
