CAVICEO, Giacomo.
Il Peregrino. Nuovamente con somma diligenza revisto, & ristampato. Venice, Pietro Nicolini da Sabbio, 1538. In-8 (156 x 100 mm) of 8 ff.n.ch., 271 ff.ch.; dark green morocco, plates decorated with simple interlacing, central monogram with double 'A', corner fleurons, spine ribbed, gilt edges (French binding from the Salel workshop period). A fine edition of this famous love and adventure novel which first appeared in Parma in 1508 and was very popular until the mid-16th century. In addition to evocations of antiquity and mythology, it contains interesting paintings of life in the 15th century and fairly free descriptions of the loves of the Peregrin and the beautiful Ginevra. The illustration includes a title with a beautiful architectural frame, and four woods, one of which is larger and illustrates the preface, as well as a different vignette for each chapter heading. A beautiful binding from the 'atelier de Salel', an anonymous bookbinder active in the mid-16th century. "A homogeneous group of extremely careful bindings appeared in Paris between 1540 and 1545: cardboard plates, beautifully textured morocco, usually black or green, refined decorations and gilt edges are all elements that characterize them. If most of these bindings were made for unknown amateurs, others clearly show, by the gilded Greek motto in their center, their link with one of the highest figures of the kingdom, the constable Anne de Montmorency... This workshop also occasionally works for the king" (Fabienne Le Bars, Reliures Royales de la Renaissance, p. 53). USTC locates only one copy in the United States (Peabody Library). Beautiful copy, well preserved in a beautiful gilt morocco binding of the time. Top hinge formerly restored but weak. We thank Fabienne Le Bars for identifying the binding workshop of this copy. Provenance: Bibliothèque des minimes (inscription on the title). Adams, C-1190.
