FLAUBERT, Gustave. - Lot 1056
FLAUBERT, Gustave. The Candidate. Comedy in four acts, performed at the Vaudeville theatre on March 11, 12, 13, and 14, 1874. Paris, Charpentier et Cie, 1874. In-12 (163 x 124 mm) of 4 ff.n.ch. of which the first is white, 165 pp., 1 f. white; paperback, original blue printed cover. Original edition from which no large paper was taken. Only play that Flaubert had represented: it stages a candidate for deputy, M. Rousselin, ready to do anything to be elected. Unsure of his convictions, friendships and programme, the apprentice politician criticizes the Revolution in front of the aristocracy, celebrates its benefits in front of the workers and, to be in vogue and secure the favour of all, pours out strings of words in "-ism". The Candidate was, in the words of Flaubert himself, "the most rifled furnace" of his career. The play had only four performances at Le Vaudeville in March 1874. Top cover unbound; copy in all margins. Carteret, I, 270; Clouzot, 122.
