GOLDONI, Carlo. - Lot 1069
GOLDONI, Carlo. Le Bourru bienfaisant, a comedy in three acts and prose. Paris, printed by Simon & fils for widow Duchesne, 1771. In-8 (193 x 119 mm) from VI, 106 pp.; fawn calf, triple gilt fillet framing, spine ribbed, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition of Goldoni's first play written in French. "In 1770 Goldoni set about a much more daring project: to write a play in French and to propose it to the Comédie-Française. Even before his arrival in France, he had been able to admire the art of French actors during one of their performances at the court of Parma in 1756. Goldoni succeeded with Le Bourru bienfaisant, a comedy in three acts and prose written in French, the most daring undertaking of his career. (...) Receiving unanimous acclaim, the play was triumphantly performed at the Théâtre-Français on November 4, 1771, and the following day in Fontainebleau. Voltaire le premier saluted the first play by a foreigner written in French and performed on the national stage" (lacomediefrancaise.fr). [Linked with 4 other plays:] - BARTHE. The Jealous Mother. Paris; widow Duchesne, 1772. 104 pp. - CHAMPFORT. The Merchant of Smyrna, comedy in one act, and in prose. Paris, Delalain, 1770. 38 pp., 1 f.n.ch. of approval (by Sartine). - SAUVIGNY. Le Persifleur, comedy in three acts and in verse. Paris, Delalain, 1771. XV, 76 pp. - MARSOLLIER. Le Connoisseur, a comedy in three acts and prose. Paris, Valade, 1771. 72 pp. Beautiful collection of 5 plays, performed in French comedy between 1770 and 1771. Slightly rubbed binding. Provenance: Fürstlich Starhembergsche Bibliothek (wet stamp).
