GOURMONT, Remy de. - Lot 1070
GOURMONT, Remy de. The Phantom. Paris, Mercure de France, 1893. In-8 (207 x 125 mm) de 113 pp., 2 ff.n.ch., 2 plates lithographed by Henry de Groux; paperback, original printed cover, special gold-paper endpapers. Original edition. One of the 300 copies printed on tinted vellum (it bears the number 73), all signed on the receipt by Rémy de Gourmont. This story, first published in 1892 in the Mercure de France, is perhaps the most "symbolist of the Gourmontian writings". For P. de Querlon, it is a "kind of liturgical and pagan love mass, of mystical sensuality; after a few ecstasies the poet comes down from his lie and his mistress, stripped of the reflection he lent her, becomes once again the impalpable ghost that they all are". Paper yellowed as often, if not a very good copy.
