GRACIAN, Balthasar. - Lot 1072
GRACIAN, Balthasar. The Man of the Court. Translated from Spanish by Amelot de La Houssaie. With notes. Paris, veuve Martin & Jean Luxor au Soleil d'or, 1684. Large in-4 (280 x 206 mm) of a frontispiece engraved by Le Pautre, 32 ff.n.ch., 326 pp., 9 ff.n.ch.; red morocco, triple gilt fillet framing, central coat of arms of Louis de France, "Le Grand Dauphin" (OHR, 2522, iron no. 6), ornate spine ribbed, roulette on the cups, gilt edges on marbling (contemporary binding). First edition in French translated by Amelot de la Houssaye. The Jesuit writer Baltasar Gracian (1601-1658) is one of the greatest Spanish essayists of the Golden Age, who can be traced back to Machiavelli, Montaigne and Castiglione and who influenced French moralists such as La Rochefoucauld. In L'Homme de cour, whose original text dates from 1647, which brings together three hundred maxims or reflections, he proposes an art of living at the court as well as in the city, saving its honour and its inner world. The 1684 translation is one of those monuments of the French literary style. The beautiful frontispiece engraved by Le Pautre depicts Louis XIV cuirassé to whom the book is dedicated. Magnificent bound copy in red morocco for Louis of France (1641-1711), the Grand Dauphin, the eldest son of Louis XIV and Maria Theresa of Austria. Adjusted copy, with a clear trace of wetness in the margin of the head. Palau, VI, 106910.
