Paris, Alain Lotrian, [after 1527]. In-4 (190 x 131 mm) of 188 leaves (22 ff.n.ch. with illustrated title, 166 ff.ch.) Collation: aa8 bb-cc4 dd6 a-z ÿ4 A-F4 G8 H-L4 M8 N4-O4 P8. Rare edition of the great herbarium in French. This famous work is a French adaptation of Matteo Plateario's Circa instans and contains, among others, texts by the Arab scientists Avicenna and Rhazes. This edition was printed by Alain Lotrian who practised in Paris between 1518 and 1546 and who was first associated with Jean Trepperel's widow. Lotrian later worked with Denys Janot, grandson of Jean I Trepperel. Bechtel suggests printing between 1528 and 1535. Richly illustrated this edition contains, apart from the title, over 300 woodcut vignettes (some repeated). Most of them depicting plants, others mandrakes, elephants, and other animals. No complete institutional copy of this extremely rare edition could be found. Title and last restored leaves, 5 of which (towards the end) have letters or words completed with pen. Provenance: Pierre Georges Borio (ex-libris and gilt initials at the tail). Bechtel, H-37; Nissen, BBI, 2336; Gultlingen, III, 1501.
