IMBERT DE LA PLATIERE, Sulpice. - Lot 1096
IMBERT DE LA PLATIERE, Sulpice. Philosophical, political and literary life of Rivarol. Paris, Barba, An dixième - 1802. 2 tomes en 1 volume in-12 (168 x 99 mm) d'un portrait gravé en frontispice, 1 f.n.ch., XII, 242 pp. pour le tome I; 2 ff.n.ch., 275 pp. pour le tome II; basane tachetée, dos lisse orné, tranches jaspées (reliure de l'époque). Original edition. Sulpice Imbert, Count de la Platière, former lieutenant-colonel of the light troops, was a member of the Academy of Arcades of Rome. Interesting biography praising Rivarol (1753-1801), writer, essayist, journalist, pamphleteer, and member of the Academy of Sciences of Berlin. Sainte-Beuve wrote about Rivarol in his Causeries du lundi (October 27, 1851): "A kind figure, an elegant bearing, a confident head carriage, supported by a rare facility of elocution, a fine originality and a pungent urbanity, earned him the favor of the salons [...] Rivarol seemed to lead only a frivolous life, and he was basically serious and diligent. He indulged in society during the day and worked at night. His ease of speech and improvisation did not prevent him from digging his thoughts out on his own. Volume 2 contains the famous Discourse on the universality of the French language. Blunt corners, work of worms with a higher bit. Signature on the title. Quérard, IV, 179.
