MALEBRANCHE, Nicolas. - Lot 1139
MALEBRANCHE, Nicolas. The search for truth, which deals with the nature of the human mind, & the use it must make of it to avoid error in science. Sixth edition. Reviewed & expanded with several clarifications. Paris, Michel David, 1712. 2 volumes in-4 (238 x 185 mm) of 12 ff.n.ch., 386 pp. for volume I; 5 ff.n.ch., 399 pp., 4 ff.n.ch. Last edition published during the author's lifetime, considered the most beautiful and authoritative for later editions. This major philosophical work is the first work of the philosopher Nicolas Malebranche (1638-1715). Published for the first time in 1674, the author will not cease to increase it with successive editions. In the disclaimer of this edition, he states: "I believe (sic) to warn the reader that of all the editions that have been made of De la recherche de la vérité, in Paris & elsewhere, this one is the most accurate & widest". "De la recherche de la vérité constitutes a key moment in the reflection of the classical age. If his inspiration is Cartesian, Malebranche supports from the outset an original theory of knowledge, truth and causality: in particular the thesis of the "vision in God" of ideas and the analysis of the causes of error. More than a theory of knowledge, it is therefore a complete theory of the human mind and its multiple functions that the book provides us with" (Malebranche, De la recherche de la vérité, edited by Jean-Christophe Bardout, Paris, J. Vrin, 2006). "This edition, and the one in 4 vol. in-12 under the same date, are the most beautiful we have of this famous work, and also the last ones that appeared during the author's lifetime" (Brunet).
