MOLIÈRE, Jean Baptiste Poquelin, dit. - Lot 1152
MOLIÈRE, Jean Baptiste Poquelin, dit. Molière's fragments. Paris, Jean Ribou, 1682. In-12 (153 x 87 mm) de I f.n.ch., 58 pp.; calf speckled, spine ribbed and decorated with the title "OEuvres de Champmeslé", spine glued (contemporary binding). Original edition, which "contains no privileges despite the mention on the title. Contrary to what P. Lacroix thinks, this edition was printed in Paris at Jean Ribou's and not in Holland; we had the good fortune to consult an extremely rare copy bound in a contemporary binding with a series of Champmeslé comedies all made by Jean Ribou" (Guibert). "These are fragments of Le Festin de Pierre, which had not yet been published. Champmeslé is said to have taken them from the wallet of his friend la Fontaine, to sew them together and arrange them as best he could in the form of a little comedy" (Lacroix). This rare first edition is at the end of a collection of 5 plays, printed by Ribou, under a general title by Guilain who gives Champmeslé (1642-1701) as the main author. These four plays can be found at - Le Parisien. Comedy. Paris, Jean Ribou, 1683. 4 ff.n.ch., 108 pp. - Les Grisettes, or Crispin chevalier. Comedy. Paris, Jean Ribou, 1683. 2 ff.n.ch., 40 pp. - Delie, pastorale. Performed on the theatre of the royal palace. Paris, Jean Ribou, 1668. 6 ff.n.ch., 84 pp. - La Rue Saint Denys. Comedy. Paris, Jean Ribou, 1682. 2 ff.n.ch., 68 pp. Very good copy in its first binding, a little rubbed, missing head covers. Provenance: library location label on the back cover. Tchemerzine-Scheler, IV, 803; Guibert, I, 388-390; Lacroix, 31 (assumes printing in Holland); Diesbach, Bibliothèque Jean Bonna, XVIIe siècle, II, 194.
