MONTAIGNE, Michel Eyquem de. - Lot 1159
MONTAIGNE, Michel Eyquem de. The Tests... New edition exactly purged of the defects of the previous ones, according to the real original: and enriched & increased in the margins of the names of the authors... Together the life of the author, & two tables. Brussels, François Foppens, 1659. 3 volumes in-12 (152 x 85 mm) of an engraved frontispiece signed P. Clouwet, 25 ff.n.ch., 468 pp. for volume I; 2 ff.n.ch., 708 pp. for volume II; 2 ff.n.ch., 510 pp.., 39 ff.n.ch. for the volume III; red morocco, dishes decorated with a Duseuil decoration, corner fleuron of small irons, decorated spine with nerves, roulette on the cups, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Published in three volumes, the privilege of which was shared between Foppens (Brussels) and Michiels (Amsterdam) without preference; copy of the Brussels edition. "It reproduces the text of 1635. This edition is wrongly considered Elzevirian (Montaigne was never published in the Elzevirian collection), although the format is identical. It was much sought after by bibliophiles in the 19th century and most of the copies on the antique bookshop market are richly dressed in morocco" (Desan). "Nice, much sought-after edition printed in Brussels by Fr. Foppens. Part of the edition bears the address of Anthoine Michiels in Amsterdam" (Tchemerzine). Very nice copy, nicely bound in red morocco at the time and complete with engraved frontispiece. Some freckles, angle of pp. 701/702 of volume II torn out without lack of text, pp.459-462 of volume I bound with a needle. Sayce & Maskell, 33; Desan, 77; Tchemerzine-Scheler, IV, 905.
