RACINE, Jean. Esther.Tragedy. From scripture. Paris, Denys Thierry, 1689. In-4 (250 x 187 mm) of 6 ff.n.ch., a frontispiece engraved by Le Clerc after Le Brun, 83 pp.; calf speckled, spine ribbed and ornamented, with jagged edges (contemporary binding). Original edition. In 1689, Madame de Maintenon asked Racine to compose a piece to be played by the demoiselles de Saint-Cyr. Esther was represented before the Court with great success on January 26, 1689, in the majestic setting of the royal house of education of Saint-Cyr. The play was not performed to the public until May 8, 1721, at the French Theatre. A good copy despite some scratches and restoration work on the binding. Provenance: Gambais library (ex-libris). Guibert, 95-96; Tchemerzine, V, 347; Le Petit, 374.
