RESTIF DE LA BRETONNE, Nicolas Edme.
Ingenuous Saxancour, or The Separated Woman: a story that shows how dangerous it is for girls to marry out of stubbornness and haste, despite their parens. Written by herself. Liège and is in Paris, Maradan, 1789. 3 volumes in-12 (165 x 96 mm) of 248 pp. for volume I; 2 ff.n.ch., 240 pp. for volume II; 2 ff.n.ch., 260 pp., 4 ff.n.ch. for volume III; brown basane, smooth spine, title piece and false nerves in gilt brown paper, red edges (binding of the period). Original edition. "This work is the rarest of all those of Restif, either because the edition was destroyed en bloc, or because the copies were systematically searched for to be destroyed one after the other.... The entire edition had to undergo retrenchments and pages 249-252 of Volume III are almost always missing" (Lacroix). Scratches; small hole (paper defect) in the last leaf of volume III, if not a pleasant copy, complete pages 249-252 of the last volume. Rives-Childs, XXXV; Lacroix, XXXVI; Diesbach, Bibliothèque Bonna, 18th century, 126.
