REUSNER, Nicolaus. - Lot 1208
REUSNER, Nicolaus. Icones Imagines Virorum literis illustrium. Strasbourg, Bernard Jobin, 1587. Small in-8 (155 x 96 mm) of 212 ff.n.ch. Snack: 8 A-Z a-b8 c4; title and text in woodcut frame, numerous woodcut portraits; red morocco, floral roulette frame, spine ribbed, gilt edges (early 20th century pastiche binding). Original edition. It is published by Bernard Jobin, "engraver of his trade, he came to settle in Strasbourg where he acquired on April 27, 1560 the right of bourgeoisie.... Raised in the Catholic religion, he switched to Protestantism on a date that cannot be specified. Having become Fischart's brother-in-law by marriage, Jobin had the privilege of publishing all the works of this fertile writer" (Ritter). His Icones Imagines Virorum is an important source for the iconography of sixteenth-century Swiss-German humanism and includes portraits of famous people such as Apian, Brant, Copernicus, Paracelsus, Bullinger, Albertus Magnus, Zwingli, Oecolampadius, Hus, Gesner, Vesalius, Hutten, Luther, Savonorola, Schwenckfeld, Münster, Amerbach, Oporinus, and Melanchthon. Burnished volume (the last book strongly), glue trace on the first 2 leaves. Good copy despite the announced defects. VD-16, R-1426; Ritter, p. 298 (with erroneous date of 1590).
