ROUSSEAU, Jean-Jacques. - Lot 1211
ROUSSEAU, Jean-Jacques. Discourse on the origin and foundations of inequality among men. Amsterdam, Marc Michel Rey, 1755. In-8 (202 x 123 mm) of a serious frontispiece according to Eisen, LXX pp., 1 f.n.ch. (warning), 262 pp., 1 f.n.ch. (errata and notice to the binder); calf spotted, double cold-filleted, spine ribbed, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition of one of the founding texts of modern philosophical and political thought. Copy on strong paper. A true reflection of his convictions, Rousseau exposes his vision of man and the world with the strong idea that society, based on property, is the cause of inequality and human corruption. Rousseau presents here for the first time his complete vision of man and the world, and overturns the political philosophy of his century and that of his contemporaries, raising controversies notably on the part of Voltaire who will answer him in a letter in 1755. Very good copy, complete with the frontispiece drawn by Eisen and engraved by Sornique, of the title vignette and of the dedication to the arms of the Republic of Geneva signed Fokke. On page 11, the correction in the pen of the bookseller Rey to the word "conformé" which added the acute accent. Binding discreetly restored. Provenance: Simone Andre Maurois (ex-libris) - Artbiblio (dry stamp on the guard). Dufour, 55.
