THEODOSE.
Codicis Theodosiani libri XVI quibus sunt ipsorum principum autoritate adiectae novellae. Basel, Henri Pierre, 1528. In-folio (306 x 207 mm) of 6 ff.n.ch., 178 ff.ch.; calf cold-stamped, with decorative castors on the plates, spine bound (contemporary binding). An early edition of the Theodosian Code, of which only extracts had been published previously in the Breviarium Alaricianum. The Theodosian Code, written in the 5th century, played a considerable role, it was the first official collection of imperial ordinances. In the East it was soon replaced by the Justinian Code, but remained in force for several centuries in the West. The Theodosian Code has come down to us through the manuscripts that circulated in the West in the Middle Ages and which contain only a fragmentary version. In the 16th century, Western jurists worked to restore and comment on the original version. This first edition was prepared by Jean Sichard, professor of law in Tubingen. The Antwerp edition of 1517, announced by Brunet (V, 789) as the first edition of the Theodosian Code contains only the extracts published in the Breviarium Alaricianum. Traces of wetness; restored spines and corners, scratches, without laces. Provenance: old traces of membership scratched or crossed out on the title. Adams, T-541; VD-16, O-1404.
