(white); brown morocco, flat ornamented with a large frame of three gilded fillets, central piece and corner finials, ornate ribbed spine, gilded edges (F. Bedford). First edition of this beautifully illustrated costume book. The book begins with a beautiful title in an engraved frame and is illustrated with 420 full-page engravings placed in an architectural setting, all engraved on wood. He engraved in the first part 361 costumes of European peoples (including Balkan, Russian and Turkish costumes), and 59 Asian and African costumes for the second part. The illustrious Venetian costumes with particular care are completed by 5 engravings illustrating the city and life in Venice. In the description of the costume of a lady from Bologna (leaflet Cc8r), Vecellio pays homage to the German engraver Christoph Krieger who practised his art in the city of Nuremberg. "The rare first edition, based largely on Nicolay's originals". (Koc). Good copy well established by Bedford. Charnieres frobees.
