H_5 cm W_4,5 cm
In a 750 thousandths gold hoop enamelled with a blue net (small missing on the top right).
Gross weight: 14.5 g.
The King wears the blue uniform with the epaulettes of a general, decorated with his plaque of the Order of the Holy Spirit, the plaque of the Order of Saint
Lazare-et-Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel with his green ribbon insignia, and his cross of the Order of Saint Louis, on a dark background.
History: Augustine's first portrait of the King was made as soon as he acceded to the throne in 1814 and was used as a prototype, exhibited at the Salon of the same year (9 x 7 cm, location unknown). Unlike Napoleon, the King posed in front of the artist, who made a multitude of official copies of his hand, especially for gifts, until 1822. Augustine was appointed "First miniature painter of the Chamber and Cabinet of the
King" on 26 June 1819. The portrait was engraved by Forssell and Lignon in 1817.
Related works: Other copies signed by the artist can be found at
Louvre (inv. RF 145), at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg (inv. ORm 864) or at the Cleveland Museum of Art (inv. 1942.1134).
Bibliography: Our miniature reproduced in "Jean-Baptiste Jacques
Augustin, 1759-1832. Une nouvelle excellence dans l'art du portrait en miniature", by Bernd Pappe, cat. 1128, p. 355. For more information on his relationship with Louis XVIII, see pp. 53-55.
