Jean-Baptiste CARPEAUX (1827-1875) - Lot 234
Jean-Baptiste CARPEAUX (1827-1875)
Tête de Puys ou La pêcheuse de vignots
Fragment in patinated plaster.
Model created in 1874.
H_19 cm (including the base)
This is probably a fragment of the head of the vineyard fisherwoman, of which the Valenciennes museum has another plaster print (catalogue 238, donated by Madame Carpeaux in 1882.) The Pêcheuse de vignots à Puys is the result of the artist's meeting with a young fisherman, a moment he relates in a letter written to his friend Bruno Chérier: "Here we are, settled in Puys. The country is superb; all the points of view are worthy of the masters.
If I wasn't suffering, I would have already rolled up my sleeves. On the way from Dieppe to Puys, I saw from the top of the car the drawing of an admirable leg coming out in the movement of the walk, from underneath the rags that only went down to the knee.
Struck by the majesty of this misery, I made Osbach run after this fisherman, and tomorrow she has to report in this crew to Dumas who works with me. She has only one savate on her left foot, the rest is just an admirable sixteen year old body, enriched with defrocks that are impossible to describe".
