Compression, circa 1970 Metal compression sculpture. Signed on the side. Metal compression sculpture. Signed on the side. Compression: H_35.5 cm W_20 cm D_7 cm Support: H_60 cm W_45.3 cm D_4.6 cm Provenance: - Gallery Fred Lanzenberg, Brussels - acquired from this gallery by the current owner in 1974 - private collection "Compressions are a curious story. By dint of working in this factory in Villetaneuse, where there was always the same scrap metal, I began to stop at scrap merchants where I discovered the world of scrap metal. They have presses for compressing expensive materials - copper, bronze, aluminium...which are piled up like bricks. And one day I went to a scrap dealer and picked up some compressions. I picked them up like Braque picked up a pebble or like Pablo picked up an object, a bicycle handlebar or a bicycle saddle. It's the same problem in the end."
