Oval carved boxwood medallion representing Saint Idda of Tog - Lot 269
Oval carved boxwood medallion representing Saint Idda of Toggenburg. Under a shelter, the saint kneels in prayer before a crucifix with a rosary in her hands; a deer with antlers and candles is lying in front of her; the scene takes place in a landscape with trees, church and castles in the background. Beautifully executed. Germany, 17th century Height: 7.4 cm - Width: 6.2 cm Rarely depicted, the Swiss saint Idda, wife of the Count of Toggenburg, was accused of adultery by her husband who recognized her wedding ring on the finger of a hunter. Furious, the Count threw Idda out of the window. Miraculously saved, she lived in seclusion and solitude. In fact, a thieving magpie had stolen her ring. Her attribute was a deer whose luminous antlers guided her through the night on her way to church.
