Writing muse in marble carved in the round. The young woman - Lot 284
Writing muse in marble carved in the round. The young woman is naked and elongated, her legs bent; she is leaning on her right elbow and writing on a scroll with a stylus; her face is full cheeks and her hair is held up in a bun by a braid that lets out locks. Southern Germany, mid-17th century. Height: 9 cm - Width: 15 cm - Depth: 7.5 cm (very slight epauflures) This marble statuette is reminiscent of some of the reclining women created by the Swabian sculptor Leonhardt Kern at the turn of the 1650s. One can recognize in fact the large canon of his languid female nudes with their broad hips and full thighs, like the two sleeping alabaster women preserved in the Württembergisches Landesmuseum at Stuttgart (inv. Nr. KK grau 104 and inv. Nr. E 85, fig. a and b) Accessed: Exhibition Schwäbisch Hall 1988-1989, Leonhard Kern (1588-1662), Meisterwerke der Bildhauerei für die Kunstkammern Europas, Hällisch-Fränkisches Museum, cat. 88 to 91, pp. 194 to 197.
