Plaque in polychrome painted enamel with gold highlights rep - Lot 291
Plaque in polychrome painted enamel with gold highlights representing Saint John the Evangelist, salmon counter-enamel. He is depicted with his head haloed, the eagle at his side holding the inkwell in his beak, writing the Gospel on his knees on which the Latin inscription IN PRIN-CIPIO ERA / VERBVM, (In the beginning was the Word), which is the beginning of the prologue to the Gospel of John (Jn, 1, 1), is written; counter-enamel signature H Poncet. F. with fleur-de-lys surmounting the HP.
Limoges, Hélie Poncet (Limoges, circa 1630 - 1668), 17th century
Height: 13.4 cm - Width: 10 cm
Moulded wooden frame, collector's label on the back
The enameller Hélie Poncet was the son of Philippe, painter and merchant in Limoges; he was not domiciled in the faubourg Magnine like his colleagues Laudin but near the church Saint-Michel-des-Lions, an indication which sometimes accompanies his signature.
Some enamels signed by this artist are in fact mentioned in various public collections, all religious, two representing Saint Mary Magdalene and the Repentance of Saint Peter at the Hospice de Nolay (Côte d'or), two others at the National Museum of Decorative Arts in Madrid representing the Evangelists Matthew and Luke, two more, the Ecce Homo and Saint Leonard at the Museum of Fine Arts in Limoges (inv.059 and 060).

Arte, 1, January 1989; M. Beyssi-Cassan, Le métier d'émailleur à Limoges XVIe-XVIIe siècle, Limoges, 2006.
