BOUGAINVILLE (HYACINTH YVES PHILIPPE POTENTIEN, BARON DE). - Lot 27
BOUGAINVILLE (HYACINTH YVES PHILIPPE POTENTIEN, BARON DE). Journal of the round-the-world navigation of the frigate La Thétis and the corvette Hope during the years 1824, 1825 and 1826. Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1837. Two volumes of text in-4 of VIII, 742 pp.; XVI, 351, 165 pp., (1) f., and an atlas in-folio of (1) f., 56 pl., (1) f., contemporary blue half calf binding, spines decorated, speckled edges, fawn half calf atlas. First edition. The illustration, contained in the atlas, is composed of 47 lithographed plates, 35 of which are based on Edmond de La Touanne's drawings and 13 hand-colored, and nine maps, eight of them on double page and one folding. Son of the first French circumnavigator, Hyacinthe Bougainville had participated in his youth in the Australian expedition of Nicolas Baudin in 1800. In 1824, he obtained the command of the Thétis, specially built for a round-the-world voyage. On a diplomatic mission, the expedition visited Reunion Island, Cochinchina, Pondicherry, then Manila and Macao before calling at Port Jackson, New South Wales. There, Bougainville gathers a considerable collection of natural history and ornithological specimens, which will be recognized as one of the most important ever seen in France. Volume II contains the "Itinerary from Valparaiso and Santiago de Chile to Buenos Aires through the Andes and the Pampas" by Edmond de La Touanne and the "Explanatory Notes for the Atlas plates". Nice copy. Minimal freckles to the volumes of text.
