CHILD (Josias). Treaties on trade and the benefits that resu - Lot 40
CHILD (Josias). Treaties on trade and the benefits that result from the reduction of the interest of money. With a small treatise against usury, by the knight Thomas Culpeper. In Amsterdam and Berlin, J. Neaulme, 1754. In-12 of xii, 482 pp., contemporary fawn calf binding, spine decorated, speckled edges. Rare first edition of the French translation by Vincent de Gournay, a major figure of 18th century economic thought, and Georges-Marie Butel-Dumont. The Brief observations concerning trade and the interest of money by Child, "an English trader, who treated with a superiority very rare in his time several important parts of political economy" (Coquelin and Guillaumin), had appeared in London in 1668. A tract against the high rate of usury by Thomas Culpeper dates from 1623. These two authors agreed that the low price of interest on money was the most powerful motive for exciting land cultivation and trade, the only two permanent sources of state power. They "contributed most to the intellectual formation of Gournay.... The School's historiography places Child and Culpeper, along with Decker and Locke, among those who, before Quesnay, published scattered truths and wise principles" (Weurlesse). Good copy. Complete text but without the final S2 sheet (table, errata?).
