DAVILA (Henri Caterin). History of the civil wars of France, - Lot 52
DAVILA (Henri Caterin). History of the civil wars of France, under the reigns of François II, Charles IX, Henri III and Henri IV, with critical and historical notes by Monsieur l'abbé *** [Mallet de Grosley]. Amsterdam, Arkstée and Merkus, 1757 (1754). Three volumes in-4 of (2) ff, iii, (1), lxiv, 502 pp. ; vi, 579 pp. ; (3) ff, 617, 142 pp., contemporary glazed blond calf binding, gilt filets on covers, spine ribbed and decorated with red morocco titleplate, inside lace, red edges. First edition of this new French translation, by Abbé Mallet, of this great classic on the Wars of Religion. It is illustrated with three title vignettes and four headings, three by Eisen (including a repetition). "The History of the Civil Wars of France is a precious source for the last half of the sixteenth century... Davila was able to combine her recognition of Catherine de Medici with an impartiality that is only denied on very few occasions. Few authors have drawn a more beautiful portrait of Jeanne d'Albret... Moreover, Davila is entirely of the Machiavellian school, in the sense that he takes a cold view of the facts, whatever they may be, and judges them from the point of view of usefulness. St. Bartholomew's Day does not wrest a single cry of indignation from him; but he ends the account with the reflection that such betrayals and violence never produce any good" (Hoeffer, New General Biography). Nice copy in blond calf. A few worn caps and corners. Small stains on the dishes.
