[GOUDAR (Angel)]. The interests of France are misunderstood, - Lot 83
[GOUDAR (Angel)]. The interests of France are misunderstood, in the branches of Agriculture, Population, Finance, Commerce, Navy, and Industry. By a citizen. Amsterdam, Jacques Coeur, (Paris), 1756. Three volumes in-12 of viii, 4367 pp. ; (2), vi, 434 pp. ; (2), 392 pp. (badly numbered 388, pagination 285-288 being doubled), contemporary marbled basane binding, spine decorated, red edges. Counterfeit published at the date of the original edition, recognizable by the "crown" motif on the title pages. The major work of Ange Goudar (1708-1791), adventurer and polygraphist, leader of the agrarian and populationist movement. He was the son of an inspector general of commerce, hence perhaps his interest in economic matters. "Of the French pre-physiocratic writers who dealt with the population from the point of view of agrarian problems and reforms, the most important was Ange Goudar" (Spengler). Like the mercantilists, Goudar gave the power of the state as the goal of all economic policy, but, unlike them, he believed that in the end this power was based on his agriculture alone and not on his industry or monetary resources. Francisq manuscript ex-libris. Balme and library stamps on titles, old library quotations on guards; printed ex-libris Domus Sanctiu Stanislai, Bibliotheca artium. Restored bindings; plates of volume III presenting a slightly different aspect from the other two volumes; light wetness in the upper corner of part of the leaves of volume I. INED, 2079; Kress, 5524; Weurlesse, p. xxvii; Spengler, pp. 63-73.
