[LAUGHS] [LAUGHS] Report of the Commissioners charged by the King with the Examination of Magnetism Animal. Printed by order of the King. Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1784. In-4 of (1) f., 66 pp., contemporary tawny half-basane binding, spine decorated with grotesque. First edition, printed in the Louvre, on the King's private presses. Lavoisier was one of five members of the Académie des Sciences, along with Borie, Sallin, Darcet and Guillotin, who, together with four delegates from the Faculty of Medicine, were charged with examining the reality of Mesmer's theories concerning animal magnetism. The commission, chaired by Franklin, after conducting experiments, concluded that the phenomenon does not exist. "Lavoisier played a very major part in the work of the commission and the motivation throughout was supplied by him" (D. and K.). The report, signed by the nine commissioners, is written "in true Lavoisier style". Valuable copy from Lavoisier's library with its ex-libris on the first cover. Duveen and Klickstein, 223.
