LEMERY (NICOLAS). - Lot 131
LEMERY (NICOLAS). Chymia class... Tenth edition. Lyon, Claude Rey, 1703 (1713?). In-8 of (8) ff., 836 pp., (1) ff., a painting, contemporary binding in speckled basane, spine decorated, speckled edges. Seven full-page engraved plates included in the pagination and an engraved folding board. The reference manual for chemists and pharmacists up to the middle of the 18th century, first published in 1675 and very often republished. The work was particularly appreciated for its clarity and the meticulous details on display to facilitate handling. Nicolas Lemery (1645-1715), "one of the most interesting men of his time", was one of the first to undermine "the alchemic mysteries which still cluttered chemistry up" (Duveen). According to Duveen, who quotes Bolton, this edition must be dated 1713. The volume bears on the first flyleaf two handwritten inscriptions from the hands of two of the first owners of the copy. The first, a doctor, states that he bought the copy in September 1709 (which would invalidate the date of 1713); the second, in a note dated April 16, 1724, states that he saw a Lyon edition dated 1713 which "copies it word for word on each page...". Stains and restorations at the binding, light wetness in the upper margin on half of the volume, small marginal worm gallery on the last leaves. Duveen, p. 348.
