MACQUER (STONE-JOSEPH). - Lot 142
MACQUER (STONE-JOSEPH). Dictionary of Chemistry... Second edition, revised and considerably expanded. Paris, de l'Imprimerie de Monsieur (Didot-le-Jeune), 1778. Two volumes in-4 of XXX pp., (1) f., 687 pp.; pp. XXXI]-LII, 856 pp., contemporary marbled calf binding, decorated spines, red edges. Repeated fleurons on the titles and two vignettes at the head, the second one signed by Cochin. Deluxe edition in in-4 format of this important edition entirely revised by the author in the light of the progress made in chemistry since the first - anonymous - publication of the book in in-8 format in 1766, and increased by almost double. It is Macquer's first dictionary of theoretical and general chemistry and his most important work. This new version includes a long article on gases that was not included in the first one and an important table of contents. A four-volume in-8 edition was published simultaneously. A very fine copy with the arms of Antoine-Antonin, Duke of Gramont, Governor of Navarre and Béarn. He married Béatrix de Choiseul-Stainville, famous sister of the minister of Louis XVI. The arms are presented in the centre of a large golden laurel wreath. Stamped with a purple C stamp. Dauvé on the titles. Slit at the bottom of a bit and minimal traces of rubbing on the bindings. Duveen, p. 377; Ferguson, II, p. 60.
