MIRABEAU (Honoré Gabriel Riqueti, Count of). Of the Bank of - Lot 165
MIRABEAU (Honoré Gabriel Riqueti, Count of). Of the Bank of Spain, known as the Bank of Saint Charles. S. l. (Geneva), 1785. In-8 of xiv, (2), 144, clxii pp., contemporary binding in marbled half calf, spine decorated, red edges. First edition. Violent attack by Mirabeau against the Spanish bank of Saint-Charles - ancestor of the Bank of Spain - accused of attracting French capital in dubious operations. Issuer of interest-bearing paper money, the bank derived its gains mainly from its privilege on supplying the army. For Mirabeau, it was useful neither to Spain, nor to shareholders, nor to foreigners. The work was banned by a decision of the Council of State on 7 July 1785 and Mirabeau replied by his Letter to Le Couteulx de la Noraye, a member of the bank's shareholders' committee, which was also censured. Important supporting documents. Good copy. A few tears and traces of rubbing on the binding, beginning of a slit without gravity in the centre of the lower cover. Einaudi, 3929; Goldsmiths, 13058; Kress, B. 907.
