RYCAUT (SIR PAUL). History of the present state of the Ottoman Empire. Paris, Mabre-Cramoisy, 1670. In-4 of (6) ff. including a frontispiece, 382 pp., (1) ff., contemporary brown calf binding, spine decorated, spine gilt. First edition in French. Engraved title, three lettering, three head vignettes and 21 figures engraved on copper in the text, all by Sébastien Le Clerc. Important work, "the best account of Ottoman affairs in the 17th century" (Blackmer). After having travelled several years in Europe, Asia, Africa, Paul Rycaut accompanied the Earl of Winchelsea, as secretary, to his embassy in Constantinople in 1661. In 1663, he drafted the articles of the peace treaty between England and the Gate and obtained the privilege for English ships to be exempted from visiting rights. In 1667 he was appointed consul in Smyrna, where he resided for eleven years. His work is the first to provide an accurate account of Turkish customs and the policies of the Ottoman government. Binding very restored (bits and headdresses and corners) and again solid. Paper a bit browned, a few freckles.
