[STEVENS (John)]. Examination of the government of England c - Lot 239
[STEVENS (John)]. Examination of the government of England compared to the Constitutions of the United States. In which some of the assertions contained in Mr. Adams' book, Apology to the Constitutions of the United States of America, and in Mr. Delolme's book, De la Constitution d'Angleterre, are refuted. By a farmer from New Jersey. Translated from the English, and accompanied by notes. London, and is in Paris, at Froullé's, 1789. In-8 of viii, 291 pp., contemporary brown calf binding, spine decorated, marbled edges. First edition of the French translation by Fabre, considerably enriched with notes by Dupont de Nemours, Condorcet and Gallois. The English text, a very rare pamphlet of only 56 pages published in New York in 1787, and one of the first American works on the Constitution, is attributed in the preface to the famous New York lawyer, later first governor of the state of New Jersey, William Livingston. It actually appears to be the work of engineer John Stevens, as indicated by a note in Jefferson's hand on the Library of Congress copy. The extensive notes by Dupont, Condorcet and Welshmen make this translation a new work, particularly significant in the French political context. "It is among the many political writings that appeared at the time, one of those that give the clearest idea of the views of the majority of the popular party on the eve of the Revolution" (Schelle. Du Pont de Nemours and the Physiocratic School). Very good copy. Binding skillfully restored. Sabin, 41646; Einaudi, 5482; Schelle, 32.
