TURGOT (Anne-Robert-Jacques). Memoir on the American colonie - Lot 248
TURGOT (Anne-Robert-Jacques). Memoir on the American colonies, on their political relations with their metropolises, and on how France and Spain had to deal with the aftermath of the independence of the United States of America. By Mr Turgot, Minister of State. Paris, de l'Imprimerie de Du Pont, 1791. In-8 of 75 pp., bradel demi-chagrin rouge moderne. Rare first separate edition of this precursor text composed by Turgot in 1776. Charged by the king to give his opinion in the face of the American crisis, the minister pleads in it against the entry into war and in favour of the freedom to be granted to the colonies in the general interest of trade. In his opinion, their emancipation was both desirable and inevitable. The work was inserted in 1788 in Mazzei's Historical and Political Research. One of the first works printed by Dupont de Nemours. Nice copy. Goldsmith I, 14728; Kress B2230; Sabin 97456.
