A rare bronze travelling Hannukah Lamp Central... - Lot 37 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
A rare bronze travelling Hannukah Lamp Central Europe, mid 19th century This small traveling chest-like Hanukkah lamp belongs to a unique and particularly rare type. It is a practical ritual object designed especially for Jews wanting to kindle Hanukkah candles when travelling away from home. The exterior is decorated with floral pattern of Fleur de Lis. The word « Hanukkah » is written in large Hebrew script at the top of the lid. An etched Star of David is engraved inside, and the Hebrew letter Zayin at its centre, perhaps referring to the owner’s initial. The eight oil lamp compartments are divided into three tiers connected with vertical hinges. When open, these three parts create a straight line of oil containers.
