A circumcision book belonging to Guedalia Charleville - Lot 63
A circumcision book belonging to Guedalia Charleville
Manuscript on parchment, manuscript on paper, three printed booklets (Amsterdam, 18th century)
Den Haag, binding dated from 1828
Fine leather binding with gold decoration
The three printed booklets include two versions of « Brit Itzhak » – « alliance of Itzhak » (Amsterdam, 1768 and 1729) and a third of « Sod H’ » –
« the secret of the Eternal » (Amsterdam, 1745) containing the prayers and customs of the evening before the circumcision. One of the first two booklets contains a long list of Dutch mohalim (circumcisers) in the Netherlands and in the Dutch colonies. The parchment pages contain handwritten prayers. The manuscript on paper explains how Guedalia Charleville obtained his diploma as a circumciser, and that he has been interrogated about his skills by Pieter de Riemer (1769-1831), a very important Dutch doctor at the time, who was professor of anatomy and obstetric surgery. It also contains the detailed register of 342 circumcisions carried out by Guedalia Charleville between 1828 and 1856. The latter came from an important family of the Jewish
community of The Hague. The whole book is in excellent condition. This book provides an invaluable testimony of Jewish life in The
Hague in the 19th century and in remarkably excellent condition.
